After a long night of celebration, finally, Jackie was able to steer and corner Traci into the powder room. Like an undercover agent, clearing the room for an exchange of life-saving information, she checked underneath each of the four stalls to be sure that they were alone. Jackie then folded her arms across her midsection and stood firmly in the center of the luxurious room, softly lit by crystal sconces that framed decorative mirrors centered above ivory pedestal sinks. “Why that slight hesitation coming down the aisle?” Traci knew instantly the moment in question and was almost surprised that Jackie noticed, until she remembered how close they are, like sisters. She took a break from powdering her nose and asked, “Are you asking me, or do you want me confirm what you already know?” Jackie peered at her for a few moments, as if searching for the answer. “Confirmation,” she finally said. After a deepened breath, Traci admitted, “Okaaay. For a moment, I thought the fairy tale was going to be played out. That he would show up to object, not hold his peace.” “Hmm-hmm. I thought so,” Jackie quipped. “But he didn’t, so you must let it go – forever!” “Of course! I am a married woman now. I meant every word that I said to Terrence before my God and family.” “That’s what I’m talking about,” Jackie approved, although she wondered if Traci’s adamant tone was in effort to convince her own self. Jackie decided that she would let it go, for now. “Well, then, go on,” she shooed, as if she was herding ducklings. “Get outta here. The man you’ve loved since I met your narrow ass is out there waiting for you.” Traci gave Jackie a smile of appreciation. “I love you. Thank you for everything.” Traci headed for the door, but before she could escape, Jackie’s troubled spirit forced her to ask, “But what if he had objected?” With a look back, Traci’s face reflected puzzlement over the question. Her lips attempted to move, but they were entangled in the uncertainty that clouded her brain. She allowed the door to softly close behind her without an answer… because she didn’t have one.
